Flushing Of Eye Wash Stations
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires eye
wash stations in all locations where corrosive materials and potentially
infectious agents (i.e. blood products, etc.) are used. The American
National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard for eyewashes requires weekly
flushing of eye wash stations. Frequent flushing will help prevent the
colonization of bacteria in these units. Some of the organisms of concern
include:
- Legionella spp.
- Pseudomonas spp.
- Acanthamoeba spp.
Environmental Health & Safety recommends that all eye washes be flushed for at
least 5 minutes. A log of the flushing should be maintained.
If you have any questions or concerns about the use or maintenance of eye
wash stations, please call the Industrial Hygiene Unit at x5-3241.
