Post-Exposure Procedure for
Human Blood and Body Fluids

As required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), a post-exposure follow-up procedure for any employee sustaining skin, mucous membrane, or percutaneous contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials was developed and implemented as part of the Exposure Control Plan.

Contact the Blood Exposure Hotline (275-1164) at University Health Service (UHS) immediately concerning all human blodd/body fluid exposures including those occurring in Strong Memorial Hospital, University's Medical Center, and Eastman Dental Center. During off-hours, a message is provided to give instructions following an exposure.

Please discard all old Incident Report forms which may contain incorrect information and may lead to a delay in the initiation of a blood exposure follow-up. The current Incident Report form (SMH115) is available on the web at www.safety.rochester.edu/SMH115.html.

All blood exposures are treated as privacy cases. You are not required to notify your supervisor. If you are stuck by a needle or other medical device you will be asked to provide the type and brand of the device (for example: Safety Glide needle, BD). All medical institutions are required by law to collect this information.
