Laser Safety for Research Laboratories

Research lasers are used in a number of departments at the University. A safety program has been implemented to help researchers work safely with Class 3b and 4 lasers. Class 1, 2 and 3a lasers have sufficiently low power output that no special precautions are needed.

To show compliance with this safety program, departments are to maintain documentation of the employee/student training tests as well as the eye examinations (because of HIPAA requirements, an invoice from the medical provider is adequate documentation). Periodica audits of departments will be done to verify complaince with the Program. Deficiencies will be reported to the researcher for corrective action. Should deficiencies not be corrected, the applicable Director/Chair and Dean will be notified.
