Laser Safety for Medical Lasers
POLICY 15.2: CLINICAL LASER SAFETY POLICY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This policy provides for the safe and effective use of medical lasers and protect staff in areas where they are used. These Health Care Laser Systems are considered Class 4 lasers, with a few exceptions at the higher output Class 3b level. Lower powered alignment lasers (Class 2 and 3a) are exempt from this policy because their low power does not pose an eye or skin hazard to patients or staff.
POLICY 14.12: CLINICAL USER PRIVILEGES
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This policy details the credentialing process for personnel for laser use and for maintaining privileges. The policy covers all Strong Hospital locations such as traditional ORs, ambulatory surgery units, physicians' offices, Ophthalmology treatment rooms, cardiac catheterization suites, endoscopy suites, radiology departments, and all other areas where operative and other invasive procedures may be performed. Only credentialed Attendings may use a lase at SMH medical care locations. Fellows, Residents, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practioners, and non-Strong physicians are not permitted to use lasers unless they are supervised by a laser-credentialed Attending.
