FUME HOOD PERFORMANCE STANDARD
Hood Used for Typical Laboratory Purposes
- An intake face velocity of not less than 100 linear feet per minute (fpm)
across an imaginary vertical plane at the hood sash with the sash 2/3 open.
- An intake face velocity of not more than 100 linear feet per minute (fpm)
with the sash full open.
- For variable volume fume hoods, the intake face velocity shall be set at
100 feet per minute (fpm).
Hoods Used for Radioactive Isotopes
- An intake face velocity of not less than 100 fpm with the sash 1/2 open.
- An intake face velocity of not more than 125 fpm with the sash full open.
- For variable volume fume hoods, the intake face velocity shall be more than
125 fpm.
Height of Opening
- The height of the opening is measured from the hood deck for those hoods
having deck level air foils.
- The bottom of the sash should be placed even with the arrow on the Air Flow

- All new fume hoods are to be measured by University Risk Management & Environmental Health
Safety (EH&S) prior to acceptance.
- Hoods used for typical laboratory purposes shall be checked by the Industrial
Hygiene Unit, ext. 5-3241.
- Hoods used for radioactive isotopes shall be checked by the Radiation
Safety Unit, ext 5-3781.
- If there is a problem with a fume hood, please contact Facilities at ext. 3-4567 IMMEDIATELY
